Intimate Femicide
Domestic violence is a pervasive social issue that affects individuals of all genders, ages, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite common misconceptions, domestic violence encompasses more than physical abuse. Victims suffer emotional, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse as well. Domestic violence occurs in relationships in which the dynamic of power and control keeps the victim trapped in a cycle of abuse. Societal norms and gender inequality also have a role in perpetuating abuse. We can combat and perhaps even prevent domestic abuse as a community when we acknowledge the interdependence of our personal narratives and experiences, and thereby foster empathy and unity. Through written reflections, art, and other forms of collective storytelling, Intimate Femicide adds to the existing body of knowledge on domestic abuse, using individual expressions to raise awareness, educate communities, and advocate for change.
