Anatomy of Character Design
Character design is mostly the work of illustration; however, the genre is rooted in research and methodology. Research and its application ensure that the illustrated characters are ‘round’ characters, characters with personalities, strengths and flaws, perspective, and wit. A ‘flat’ character is nothing more than an illustration. ‘Round’ characters are illustrated mediums of communication. As such, character design, incorporated into a work of graphic design, can heightened and/or deepen the messaging in unique and memorable ways. The Anatomy of Character Design explores this relatively untapped potential in a series of graphic posters that incorporate various methods of character illustration to distinguish, enhance, and amplify the messaging. Applying illustration-based methods and research to character creation in the context of graphic design demonstrates the potential for new forms of creative expression in the conveyance of ideas and identities.
