Child Sensory Engagement
Simple tasks that we often take for granted pose significant challenges for individuals with Angelman Syndrome, for children and adults alike. Based on my direct experience with my brother, who has Angelman Syndrome, I’ve come to understand the profound effects of the condition on sensory processing. These effects extend to complicating even the most fundamental tasks, rendering it challenging for individuals to sustain a state of calmness, regardless of duration. In crafting a fidget toy tailored for people with Angelman syndrome, I aim to provide a calming mechanism that caters to their unique sensory needs, fostering emotional regulation and promoting a sense of comfort and security. Recognizing the challenges these children face in maintaining calmness amidst sensory overload, my endeavor is not only about creating a toy but about designing a tool that empathetically responds to their individual experiences. By employing materials that offer tactile stimulation and visual appeal, I hope to engage these children in a holistic sensory experience, acknowledging their need for personalized support. This project is not only about functionality; it’s also about creating a bridge of understanding and connection between the designer and the user, acknowledging the importance of empathy in design
