Cultural Exchange in Chinese
Language is an important part of national culture. It is a tool with which people communicate and express themselves. It embodies cultural inheritance and fosters the ongoing development of national culture. In international exchange and diplomatic activities, translation plays a vital role, making communication and exchange between different cultures possible. Over time and with the increasing importance of cultural exchange, the creation and dissemination of new vocabularies has become even more vital and this, in turn, has prompted increased innovation and diversification in methods of translation, thus giving rise to loanwords. Chinese is a unique writing system that lends itself to the phenomenon of loanword translation. By using the same pronunciation of Chinese characters in translation, loanwords are visually consistent while retaining the pronunciation between translated loanwords and their originals. By combining borrowed words in Chinese characters with the original English, Cultural Exchange in Chinese demonstrates how cultural exchange is manifested in Chinese exonyms. This kind of communication not only enriches Chinese vocabulary, but also reflects the inclusiveness of Chinese characters, thereby promoting cultural diversity.
