If I Die
Every day I step into a new skin, scrambling to document the shedding I leave in my wake. Spans of time long forgotten recaptured in the physical media I unearth. My third grade diary: a hand-sized, mostly blank collection of pages encased in a plastic sleeve decorated with cartoon dogs. One of the few entries reveals something obvious to me only in retrospect; disdain for the elementary-school boy-crush explained by a then denied queer identity. I’ve spent years of my life flip-flopping between labels, an incoherent mess of mystery and discovery. If I Die engages the viewer in an exploratory textile puzzle designed to emulate the messy unraveling of identity and sexuality throughout one’s adolescence and beyond.
