Afflicting Feathers
Neurodivergence is a pertinent part of how some people live their lives. It is an aspect of their identity. To be neurodivergent is to be born with a way of thinking, feeling, and interacting with the world that differs from the average population. It can easily be criticized, misunderstood, or brushed aside by those ignorant of what neurodivergence is. Neurotypical people don’t understand why someone would act in ways perceived to be ‘different’ or ‘abnormal,’ and think of it as a kind of deliberate affect. Afflicting Feathers examines the behaviors commonly seen and experienced by 4 of 5 neurodivergent individuals through the lens of a bird. Adopting various characteristics of a bird's form and its nature, I was able to express personal interpretations and feelings towards my own neurodivergence in a symbolic way. This introspection led to a typographical process based on these emotions and the hardships of living and struggling as a neurodivergent person.
