Minimalism: Exploring Chinese and Western Graphic Design
As a graphic designer, minimalism has profoundly impacted my work. It taught me how to express my ideas concisely and clearly. This design style emphasizes removing all unnecessary elements in the work, keeping only the key information, and using lines, graphics, and negative space to create a clean, simple, and visually striking visual effect. As a Chinese designer, I have noticed that my understanding of minimalism in graphic design is primarily influenced by European and American principles, such as Bauhaus functionalism and the use of grid systems. However, I am curious—does minimalism in graphic design also exist within the context of Chinese culture? If so, how is it similar and different from Western principles? This question aroused my curiosity and desire to explore. My thesis aims to explore the principles of minimalism in graphic design in the context of European and American cultures and to examine how traditional Chinese design elements are integrated with minimalism concepts. By comparing the different visual expressions of the East and the West, I hope to explore how simple visual elements can be used to combine the two to create a minimalist style that is both clear and unique.
