Visual Storytelling: The Role of Design in Enhancing Children’s Literacy
Children's books are often our first encounter with storytelling, imagination, and visual language. Their pages are filled with bold illustrations, playful typography, and lively characters, which shape how we learn and understand the world. For my graphic design thesis, I am exploring the world of children's books, driven by my fascination with the vibrant illustrations and dynamic typography that bring these stories to life. I am particularly interested in how these visual elements, combined with storytelling, captivate young minds and enhance their imagination and reading skills. Design is a powerful tool for visual communication and learning. Through a series of projects including a research book, a poster, and a card game, I am investigating how visual storytelling can engage young audiences and contribute to their early cognitive growth. Each piece examines different ways in which design can enhance a child's connection to literature and create a memorable, interactive reading experience. This thesis explores the intersection of design and visual storytelling. I aim to better understand how design influences children’s engagement with literature and contributes to their cognitive development.
