Belonging Through Lotería
For my thesis, I plan to recreate the traditional Mexican game Lotería, drawing inspiration from my experiences as both Mexican and Black. Growing up, I often felt torn between two cultures—being the Black girl in a Mexican environment and the Mexican girl in a Black community, which left me feeling like I never truly belonged. However, playing Lotería with my family created moments of connection and belonging. As I reflect on this, I want to preserve a time capsule of my childhood influences and interests while creating an inclusive, joyful space that celebrates my biracial upbringing that can be played and shared with others. I've always been captivated by the design and symbolism of Lotería cards, and I aim to create a deck of 54 cards that reflect both of my cultural backgrounds. The deck will include physical prizes, such as mini prints, zines, and tote bags, because, in traditional Lotería, there is always a winner.
