Crosswalk Perches are street pole covers that double as benches—redesigning an existing streetscape product into pedestrian-friendly seating.
In interviews, older adults emphasized walking as a preferred form of exercise because of its low impact and accessibility. Yet U.S. cities often fail to support walkability, lacking public seating and other pedestrian-friendly infrastructure that make walking more viable.
Crosswalk Perches addresses this gap by transforming decorative light pole bases—products cities already purchase—into functional benches. By offering places to rest at key intersections, the design encourages walking, supports aging in place, and invites movement for all.
