generation z
“As the first real digital natives, Gen Zers—speaking generally—are extremely online. Gen Zers are known for working, shopping, dating, and making friends online; in Asia, Gen Zers spend six or more hours per day on their phones.” (What is Gen Z? McKinsey & Co., August 28, 2024)
generation z explores Gen Z’s unique relationship with technology. Through primary and secondary research, the project attempts to answer questions such as: “What defines Gen Z?” and “How has technology shaped our generation?”.
By conducting in depth interviews with Gen Zers of various backgrounds, common themes of identity, overexposure, and concern for technology emerged. Using this research, in addition to many secondary sources, a collection of interactive animations were designed representing these commonalities for the user. Using randomized variables, there is a generative aspect to these sequences that reflect how all experiences are unique yet similar between Gen Z individuals. The research, interviews, and other media will be archived on generationz.world, and are displayed here as a physical installation immersing viewers by embracing interaction; letting them share and become a part of this interactive experience.
