Play can be utilized to teach, relax, and challenge us in engaging ways. Video games are one form of play that can provide limitless opportunities. It is a growing industry that caters to a wide audience and a myriad of diverse interests.
Unfortunately video games fall short when it comes to addressing or satisfying players with specific needs. Important conversations of these needs go unmentioned or overlooked, the responsibility often falling onto the underserved population as they have to self advocate for accessibility. Accommodating these needs benefits the whole gaming community, not just those who require them. Yet, awareness of this issue continues to go mainly unnoticed.
Playtesters is a visual novel designed to highlight these unmet needs. This game invites players to play in the perspective of a character with limited abilities, fostering empathy, encouraging advocacy, and initiating discussions about the importance of disability accessibility in gaming.
