Stream is a bike lane lighting system that harmonizes the interaction between cyclists and motorists in the shared street environment.
In multiple interviews, bicyclists expressed comfort in being recognized. The visual indicator of their presence in most car mirrors provides awareness to drivers and comfort to bicyclists, creating a sense of harmony.
Stream aims to accomplish a similar sense of harmony through embedded road lights. As a rider approaches an unprotected area, like an intersection, Stream detects their presence. A sequence of red lights blink in unison, alerting road users of the cyclist passing. This system benefits new riders by providing a consistent, accessible form of awareness to drivers. An added benefit of Stream is providing valuable data of bike lane usage to cities and advocacy groups.
