Reimagining Chicago’s Austin Neighborhood
The Chicago Austin neighborhood is one of many that is lacking in resources centered around food, healthcare and leisure. The initiatives currently implemented are also lacking in quality. Because of this Austin is considered a resource desert. Resource deserts negatively affect physical and mental health of minority communities and low income neighborhoods. As a whole, resource deserts disrupt communities by creating hostile living environments. Reimagining Austin is a three part project that consists of posters, a typographic installation, and photo collages. The posters reflect the wants and needs of the community. The typographic installation promotes community engagement. The photo collages provide a visual representation of the wants and needs of the community. Every community has a right to adequate resources. Austin may be desolate but the goal is to reignite the passion and vibrancy in Austin. This project takes the first step into making Austin an ideal community and to rejuvenate other resource deprived communities across the city.
