Molded In Silence : The Erosion of Language and Identity
As the child of Deaf parents, sign language has always been my native language, connecting me to my family and identity. However, the infrequent use of sign language due to distance has led to a sense of losing both my language and a part of myself. This thesis explores language loss within sign language, using the metaphor of melting wax to symbolize the gradual erosion of this vital form of communication. Just as wax drips away, sign language faces the forces of cultural neglect, societal pressure, and technological disruption. Through a combination of linguistics, visual art, and cultural studies, this work examines the factors contributing to the decline of sign language. The melting wax imagery represents how language fades when not actively preserved. By intertwining my personal experience with broader societal trends, this thesis aims to spark a conversation about preserving sign language, cultural identity, and the need for advocacy within the Deaf community.
